I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta. I am also a Fellow at the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute and hold a Canada CIFAR AI Chair.
I earned my Ph.D. in Computer Science from UT Austin, advised by Greg Durrett, and my bachelor's degree from the School of Software at Tsinghua University. I was also a postdoctoral fellow at Princeton Language and Intelligence, where I worked with Danqi Chen.
I study language models: how they reason, and how to enable deeper, more general, and more reliable thinking. My work spans post-training, inference techniques, and evaluation benchmarks. Lately, I'm especially interested in general-purpose reasoning models and long-context reasoning.

Prospective MSc/PhD Students: I am recruiting 1-2 fully funded MSc/PhD students in the upcoming cycle. Please note that our MSc program is fully research based and fully funded (same as the first 2 years in a PhD program), and our PhD program is short (3 - 4 years). So we do not directly take bachelor students as PhD students. Please email me at xi.ye@ualberta.ca and include "Prospective Student" in the email subject line.
